Hyundai i20 diesel & petrol CVT discontinued – No BS6 update

Rushlane has learnt that the next generation i20 is due for launch in June and till then the existing model will be available only with the petrol engine and manual transmission. Production has stoped and some dealers have stopped taking bookings as they no longer have stock. Those dealers who have stock, are accepting bookings till stocks exist.
Of the seven petrol variants of the Hyundai i20 available so far, the entry level ERA manual, the mid-level Sportz+ CVT and fully loaded Asta (O) CVT have been discontinued. Overall, of the 12 variants, only 4 of them have received BS6 upgrade which puts the premium hatchback at a disadvantage, especially when a new promising rival, the Tata Altroz, rides in

However, Hyundai is already focusing on the 2020 i20 which will have India as one of its first markets. The 2020 Hyundai i20 has been spotted testing extensively in Europe as well as India for about a year now. Based on the spyshots, the next gen model receives significantly revised front and rear fascia styling while the profile retains a sense of familiarity.

The new hatchback will come with a wide array of new equipment (especially on the connectivity front), a brand new interior and improved safety features. The new Hyundai is likely receive 5-star rating in Euro-NCAP crash tests.
The India-spec 2020 Hyundai i20 is expected to be available with an entry-level naturally aspirated 1.2-liter petrol engine and a 1.0-liter GDI turbo petrol unit. The diesel engine is likely to be the 1.2-liter BS6 diesel unit which made its debut with the Aura compact sedan. Another viable candidate is the 1.5-liter BS6 unit which also powers the Kia Seltos and the upcoming Creta 2020, albeit in a slightly tuned down version. The next gen hatchback will offer both manual and automatic transmission options.

Since its inception, India has always been the i20’s primary market and that is set to continue with the next generation model. However, with increased competition and general shift in the customer preference towards crossovers, the new hatchback will have its work cut out.
It would be interesting to see if the 2020 Hyundai i20 can manage to snatch the premium hatchback throne from the ageing Maruti Baleno or not.
